Why You Should Stability Test Your PC — No Matter Where You Bought It

Stability testing isn't just for overclockers or hardcore enthusiasts. Whether your PC is brand new, freshly built, or a few years old, running a stress test is one of the smartest things you can do to catch problems before they cost you.
You just built (or bought) a new PC. Everything boots up fine, Windows is installed, and your first game runs great. Job done, right?
Not quite. A PC that boots and runs casually isn’t the same as a PC that’s stable. Hidden hardware issues — a slightly loose RAM stick, an overaggressive factory overclock, a thermal paste application that wasn’t quite right, or a PSU that struggles under full load — can all lurk undetected until exactly the wrong moment. Stability testing is how you find those problems on your terms, rather than during an important work deadline or a ranked match.
This guide is for everyone. You don’t need to be an overclocker. You don’t need to have built your own PC. Even if you bought a prebuilt, stability testing is worth doing.
What stability testing actually does
A stress test pushes your PC to 100% load across its CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage simultaneously — loads that typical everyday use never reaches. By running your system at maximum capacity for a sustained period, you can:
Catch thermal issues — Is your CPU or GPU hitting dangerous temperatures under load?
Surface RAM errors — Faulty or misconfigured memory is one of the most common causes of random crashes and blue screens.
Expose PSU instability — A power supply that can’t sustain full load will cause crashes or, in rare cases, damage components.
Validate overclocks — Factory “game clocks” and XMP/EXPO RAM profiles are technically overclocks. They need to be verified.
Identify early hardware failure — New components occasionally have defects. Better to find out during a controlled test than after months of frustration.
The tools you should know
OCCT — The gold standard
Free / Paid tiers | Windows
OCCT (OverClock Checking Tool) is the most comprehensive stability testing suite available, and the one we recommend starting with. It can stress test your CPU, GPU, memory, and power supply — individually or all at once — and logs voltage, temperature, clock speed, and error data throughout. Its power supply test in particular is uniquely useful, as it cycles loads across both the CPU and GPU to stress the 12V rail in a way few other tools replicate.
The free version covers everything most users need. Run the CPU: OCCT test for at least one hour, the GPU: 3D Standard test for 30 minutes, and the Memory test for at least an hour. If any test produces errors or causes a crash, you’ve found a problem.
Prime95 — The CPU torture test
Free | Windows, Linux, macOS
Prime95 is a mathematical computation program that, when run in “Torture Test” mode, pushes your CPU harder than almost any real-world workload. The Small FFTs preset maximises heat output and is excellent for validating cooling. Blend mode stresses both CPU and RAM together.
Note that Prime95’s load exceeds what most CPUs will see in everyday use, so it’s intentionally brutal — that’s the point. If your system is stable in Prime95, it’s stable.
MemTest86 — The RAM specialist
Free | Bootable USB
MemTest86 runs from a bootable USB drive, outside of Windows entirely, and performs deep pattern-based tests on your RAM. This is the most thorough way to check for memory errors, and it’s especially important if you’re running XMP or EXPO (your RAM’s advertised speed profile, which is technically an overclock).
Run it overnight for a full pass — ideally two passes. Zero errors is the only acceptable result. Even a single error means your RAM configuration needs attention, whether that’s adjusting XMP timings or reseating the sticks.
FurMark — GPU burn-in
Free | Windows
FurMark applies an extremely heavy synthetic load to your GPU, making it useful for quickly identifying thermal throttling, artifacting, or driver crashes. Run it for 15–30 minutes and watch your GPU temperature. If it climbs past 90°C and stays there, your cooler or thermal paste may need attention.
FurMark is intentionally more aggressive than any real game, so treat it as a diagnostic tool rather than a pass/fail benchmark. Some degree of throttling is normal; crashes or visual artifacts are not.
CrystalDiskInfo — Don’t forget your storage
Free | Windows
Not a stress test, but an essential health check. CrystalDiskInfo reads S.M.A.R.T. data from your drives and flags warnings like reallocated sectors, high temperatures, or excessive read errors. Run this as part of any new PC setup routine — a drive with a poor health status is one that may fail without warning.
A practical testing order
Here’s a sensible sequence to follow on a new or recently built PC:
Check temperatures at idle with HWiNFO64 or HWMonitor before any testing. If something is already running hot, find out why before stressing it.
Run MemTest86 overnight from a bootable USB.
Run OCCT’s Memory test inside Windows for one hour.
Run Prime95 Small FFTs for one hour, watching CPU temperatures.
Run OCCT GPU: 3D Standard for 30 minutes.
Run OCCT’s Power Supply test for 30 minutes (this stresses CPU and GPU simultaneously).
Check CrystalDiskInfo for storage health.
If everything completes without crashes, errors, or alarming temperatures, your PC is stable.
What to do if something fails
Don’t panic. Most issues have straightforward fixes:
RAM errors — Try reseating your sticks, or disabling XMP/EXPO and retesting at stock speeds. If errors persist at stock, one of your sticks may be faulty.
High temperatures — Check that fans are spinning, thermal paste is applied correctly, and that airflow in your case is reasonable. A CPU hitting 100°C under Prime95 warrants immediate investigation.
Crashes under GPU load — Often a driver issue or a power limit being hit. Update GPU drivers and check that your PCIe power connectors are fully seated.
PSU-related instability — If your system crashes only under combined CPU+GPU load, your power supply may be undersized or failing.

Stability testing a PC takes an afternoon of background running — you don’t need to sit and watch. Set the tests going, come back later, and check the logs. That small investment of time can save you from months of mysterious crashes, corrupted saves, or data loss.
